Nathalia Angling Club goes green

The Nathalia Angling Club recently purchased and installed solar panels thanks to a Moira Shire Council Community Strengthening Grant.

Mayor Libro Mustica said the Angling Club had received $2,500 for the project.

“Council approved this grant primarily because the money was going towards powering the club using renewable energy, benefitting the environment and also lowering the electricity costs for the club,” Cr Mustica said.

Vice President of the Nathalia Angling Club, Roland Huber said the solar panels had been of great benefit so far with savings exceeding their expectations.

“We just love this has helped both the environment, plus cut our power costs in half to help save money for the club,” Mr Huber said.

“We have a few appliances that need to be left on regularly, plus computer screens, an office, and kitchen to power.”

The Angling Club will be using the money they are now saving to further benefit the club.

“We are regularly involving the schools when doing activities such as relocating fish from the channels during seasonal maintenance and our annual fish stocking into our natural waterways; the kids love carrying the buckets of fish, naming the bigger ones and setting them free into our lakes and rivers,” Mr Huber said.

“The Angling Club also hosts a fishing competition for the disabled and a come and try fishing day for kids every year make sure everyone can be included.

“The fishing rods we have here at the club were also purchased using Moira Shire Council grants so we can provide all the equipment for these events making them accessible for everyone to join in.”

When asked about the application process for the grant, Mr Huber said it was really simple.

“The application process was pretty straightforward. I encourage every club to take up the opportunity to apply for funding from Council.”
