Moira Shire Council has secured $544,000 through the Federal Government’s 2026/27 Infrastructure Improvement Blackspot Program to address one of the Shire’s worst crash intersections.

The funding will be used to treat the intersection of Old Wilby Road and Channel Road in Yarrawonga, which has recorded five crashes over the five-year period between 2019 and 2023 – three of which resulted in community members suffering serious injuries requiring hospitalisation.
The intersection’s crash history ranks it among the most dangerous in the Shire.

The need for improvements at this location has been well known within the community for some time, with local residents, Yarrawonga CFA and Yarrawonga SES all lobbying for action over recent years.

Works funded under the program will include the installation of raised safety platforms on Channel Road, upgrading ‘give way’ signs to ‘stop’ signs, kerb and channel works, improved signage, delineation and lighting, and other supporting road safety treatments. A reduction in the speed limit to 80 km/h is also being considered as part of the overall safety response.

Moira Shire Council Chair Administrator Dr Graeme Emonson PSM welcomed the funding and acknowledged those who had campaigned for safety improvements at this intersection.

“This is a result of the community and Council working together to highlight the danger of this intersection and to secure funding to reduce the risk,” Dr Emonson said.

“We are grateful for the efforts of those who have advocated for improvements here, and we are pleased to have secured this Federal Government investment to finally deliver them.”

Further details on the construction timeline will be announced in due course.
