Substantial improvement works at Moira Shire’s highest-risk intersection have reached a major milestone, with construction of the new Five Ways roundabout in Yarrawonga now nearing the halfway mark.

The $2 million upgrade is transforming the intersection of Gilmore Street, South Road, Cahills Road, Woods Road and Old Wilby Road into a new roundabout, designed to substantially increase safety and improve traffic flow.

Construction remains well on track.

Works completed recently include installation of the subgrade and preliminary pavement layers, as well as the installation of drainage infrastructure, including pits and pipes.

In the next month, works will see the construction of footpaths, kerbing and the installation of public lighting.

The intersection remains closed during construction and detours and traffic management is in place.

Moira Shire Council Chair Administrator Dr Graeme Emonson PSM said the upgrade was critical for Council to meet the access needs of a growing population.

“Seeing significant progress on this project is an exciting step forward. This new roundabout is a key part of ensuring we meet the growing needs of the community now and into the future,” he said.

“This intersection has been identified as the highest traffic risk in our region due to its accident history. The new roundabout is crucial to help safely manage increasing traffic flows while also improving access for pedestrians.”

Construction is expected to be complete in July.
