Construction of cell 9 at the Cobram landfill site is now complete and has secured Moira Shire’s waste disposal capabilities into the future.

Mayor Libro Mustica said Cobram had the only landfill site in the shire.

“We are committed to maximising the lifespan of the Cobram landfill through constructing best-practice ‘cells’ as well as through diversion and recycling activities,” Cr Mustica said.

“The landfill site has capacity for 15 cells, and cell 9 – at a cost of almost $900,000 – has just been completed for Moira’s waste disposal future.

“Waste generation projections indicate the Cobram landfill should have sufficient capacity to service the shire for the next 20 years.

“Cell 9 is approximately 60,000m³ and will service Moira Shire’s waste disposal for around five years.”

Cr Mustica said over recent years the life of the landfill site had been extended significantly.

“This is due to a number of factors including increased diversion by implementing shire-wide organic waste collection and installing a commercial waste sorting facility at the landfill site,” he said.

“All our waste sites must meet the needs of Council, our communities, and commercial customers as well as be compliant and, where possible, utilise best practice management standards.”

Cr Mustica said work started in August 2020 and was completed earlier this year.

“The cell design incorporates a 1m thick compacted engineered clay liner to protect the underlying groundwater which is covered with a 300mm drainage layer to remove leachate, or waste water, from within the cell,” he said.

“It was then covered with a geosynthetic fabric.

“The cell 9 project design and construction was managed internally by our Waste team and delivered in specification, on time and on budget.”
