Funding for school children’s crossings in Yarrawonga

Moira Shire Council has received $360,000 to upgrade two school children’s crossings in Yarrawonga. 

The existing crossings on Gilmore Street and Woods Road will be upgraded to raised pedestrian crossings, thanks to funding from the Victorian Government’s Safe Local Roads and Streets Program. 

The crossings service Yarrawonga College P-12 (Gilmore Street) and Sacred Heart Primary School (Woods Road). Both schools supported Council’s submission for the upgrades. 

Moira Shire Council Chair Administrator Dr Graeme Emonson PSM welcomed the funding. 

“Road safety is a high priority for Council,” Dr Emonson said. 

“Projects like these align with Council’s goals in our Safe Routes to School Program and the Moira Shire Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan 2025-2030.” 

The new raised crossings – sometimes called ‘wombat’ crossings – will improve pedestrian safety by making them more visible to drivers, who are required to slow down, and by providing a flat, continuous path for people with mobility issues. 

The crossing works were identified through the School Safety Improvement Package, now part of the Safe Local Roads and Streets Program – a joint initiative between the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) that provides Victorian councils with funding for road safety infrastructure improvements. 

Detailed designs of the upgrade works are in progress, with the works to be carried out in coming months.
