Nominations for the 2023 Australia Day Awards are now open for individuals or organisations that have endeavoured to enhance and provide for their local community and instil a sense of community spirit and awareness.

Mayor Libro Mustica said nominees who are Australian Citizens and have made a significant voluntary contribution during 2022, or who have given outstanding service to their local community over a number of years are eligible.

“But it is not just individual people who can be nominated,” Cr Mustica said.

“A project or event that a school, community group or organisation has held which went that extra mile to help their local area can also be nominated.

“These awards are an opportunity to recognise those in our community who have given tirelessly for the benefit of others.

“We are fortunate to have so many community minded people and the Australia Day Awards provides each town throughout our shire with a fantastic opportunity to recognise their commitment, contribution and effort.”

There are six award categories – Citizen of the Year; Junior Citizen of the Year; Young Citizen of the Year; Community Event of the Year; Community Organisation of the Year; and Arts, Culture and/or Environment Project of the Year.

“These nominations will go towards the individual town ceremonies to be held on Australia Day 2023,” Cr Mustica said.

“The nominations will also be considered for the Moira Shire Achievement Awards to be held in April next year.

“With the success of the 2022 Moira Shire Australia Day Award ceremony, held in late April due to COVID restrictions, Council has decided to adopt this timing to allow for each town’s celebrations to be unhindered by the overall Council awards evening.

“By naming this new ceremony the Moira Shire Achievement Awards, all residents of Moira Shire can be considered, not just Australian citizens, and will allow for a more inclusive and representative ceremony.”
