The Gender Equality Act 2020 (the Act) came into effect in March 2021 and requires public sector organisations to address its obligations to promote gender equality in the workplace and also consider gender equality in the policies, programs and services that impact our community as well as developing and implementing a Gender Equality Action Plan (GEAP).
Gender equality means equal rights, opportunities, responsibilities and outcomes for people of different genders. It also includes other forms of disadvantage or discrimination that a person my experience due to other characteristics, such as race or ethnic group, religion, disability, age, sexual orientation and gender identity.
Developing our GEAP is Council’s next step in becoming more gender equitable. The GEAP has been designed to meet the immediate needs of our staff and community, as well as looking to the future to develop a long term strategy.
Our GEAP has been assessed as compliant with the Act by the Commission for Gender Equality in the Public Sector.
