Numurkah Levee Stage One nears completion

After months of significant on-ground works, Stage One of the Numurkah Levee Project (the northern levee) is progressing well, marking an important milestone in Council’s efforts to better protect homes, community spaces and local infrastructure from flooding.

The final stages of the concrete wall for the northern levee are expected to be completed in the coming weeks.

Flood prevention remains a high priority for Numurkah. Once complete, Stage One will help protect more than 400 properties from major flood events.

Works have been delivered in a staged approach across approximately 3.4 kilometres, from the Goulburn Valley Highway to Kinnairds Road. To date, 1692 cubic metres of concrete have been used to construct 1715 metres of levee wall.

Over the past 12 months, progress has continued along the levee alignment, with excavation and compaction works completed across multiple sites. The first section of levee wall near the wetlands has been constructed, along with delivery of the Remembrance Drive surge basin, now connected to a new drainage layout.

Along Quinn Street, the walking track has been upgraded and partially elevated to integrate seamlessly with the levee, while careful design and construction have allowed 13 mature trees to be retained, preserving the character of the corridor.

The much-loved Louis Hamon Rose Garden has also been thoughtfully redesigned to make way for the levee while ensuring it remains a valued community space.

Moira Shire Council Chair Administrator Dr Graeme Emonson PSM thanked the Numurkah community for its patience and support during the development of one of Council’s major infrastructure projects.

“Major projects can cause disruptions in our everyday lives, and Council has worked closely with the contractors to minimise impacts where possible. Thank you to the Numurkah community for working with us as we deliver this important structure,” Dr Emonson said.

As Stage One nears completion, planning for Stage Two (the southern levee) is now underway. Council has secured Federal Government support for stage two, but is seeking Victorian Government funding to ensure that this important protective infrastructure can be delivered in full for the Numurkah community.
