The Numurkah Community Learning Centre, in collaboration with the Numurkah Lions Club, Numurkah Aquatic and Fitness Centre, and Moira Shire Council, is proud to announce the launch of a new Shower Program. This program aims to provide essential showering facilities for individuals in need within the community.

Commencing on 7th July 2023, the showering facilities will be available every Friday from 12pm to 2pm at the Numurkah Aquatic and Fitness Centre, located at 184 Melville Street, Numurkah. The program will offer a safe and welcoming environment where individuals can access showers, ensuring their basic hygiene needs are met.

Moira Shire Council Chair Administrator John Tanner AM addressed the significance of this program.

"Last year in Yarrawonga, the Council held a community roundtable meeting to look at the homelessness issue we are facing here and what should be done. The Numurkah Community Learning Centre was part of that meeting. It was noted that Numurkah had a shelter shortage and a lack of outreach services,” he said.

“The NCLC is doing an excellent job in helping many community members with outreach services in the form of food and material relief, including fuel cards, bus travel, and laundry tokens. However, their community house volunteers also reported on the need for a place for people to shower safely." Mr Tanner said.

To address this pressing need, the Shower Program was seen as a valuable addition to the assistance provided by the Numurkah Community Learning Centre. The program aims to provide individuals experiencing homelessness with a dedicated space to take showers safely and maintain their personal hygiene.

As part of the commitment to supporting those in need, towels and hygienic products will be provided for patrons to use during their visit. The Numurkah Community Learning Centre invites the community to contribute to this meaningful initiative by donating towels and hygiene products. Chair John Tanner AM expressed his concerns about homelessness.

"Homelessness is a major issue today no matter where you live... and it is one where there is still a lot to learn about - and do - in how to address it."

He further highlighted the increase in homelessness across the Goulburn Valley, including Moira Shire and Greater Shepparton, as revealed in recent ABS figures.

“Considering the potential impact of the October floods last year and the challenges surrounding social housing and waiting lists, it is likely that the number of individuals experiencing homelessness has risen since the 2021 census. Moira Shire Council remains dedicated to finding sustainable solutions and supporting initiatives like the Shower Program to address the urgent needs of the community,” he said.
