Moira Shire and AFL Goulburn Murray promote road safety messages

Published on 05 June 2024

Road safety is on the agenda for Moira Shire Council and community sporting clubs as an initiative driven by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and the Australian Football League (AFL) Victoria will see clubs spreading the key message to ‘Show up for your team. Slow down on the road’. In addition to road safety benefits, some clubs will be able to access the TAC Club Rewards Program, encouraging safe driving behaviours while earning financial rewards.

Moira Shire Council’s Chair Administrator John Tanner AM stated that the goals of the TAC Club Rewards Program align perfectly with Moira Shire Council’s road safety objectives.

“Council is committed to ensuring the safety of all road users by promoting responsible driving habits and implementing measures that protect all motorists, pedestrians and cyclists,” said Mr Tanner.

“The past few years have been harsh on Moira Shire roads. We have recorded far too many fatalities. We need to work together to create a safer environment for everyone on our roads.”

“We will be working with AFL Goulburn Murray to support eligible sporting clubs within the Moira Shire to participate in this program. Peer-to-peer conversations are so valuable in developing a culture that encourages safe driving, and as part of this year’s TAC Club Rewards Program, clubs will be asked to start conversations and be part of the campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of speeding.”

The theme for 2024’s program is ‘Show up for you team. Slow down on the road’.

Council’s Panel of Administrators met with representatives from AFL Goulburn Murray to discuss strategies for promoting safe driving behaviours on our roads. This meeting aligned with the launch of the 2024 TAC Club Rewards Program, which offers Victoria’s grassroot football and netball clubs the opportunity to apply for a share of $600,000.

Now in its fifth year, the TAC Club Rewards Program allows AFL Victoria-affiliated football and netball clubs to apply for up to $10,000 in rewards for promoting road safety to their members throughout the season.

Moira Shire Council will be reaching out to eligible clubs in the coming weeks to offer support and assistance in their applications for the 2024 TAC Club Rewards Program. More information can be found at:
