The Yarrawonga Waterslide has reached the end of its usable life and this summer will be the final season for this popular foreshore attraction.

General Manager Community Sally Rice said the slide was constructed more than 30 years ago, and due to its age, the maintenance requirements were steadily increasing.

“The slide is now becoming financially unviable with annual maintenance and running costs steadily increasing,” Ms Rice said.

“Unfortunately, there have also been multiple incidents of vandalism, particularly in the last two seasons, resulting in thousands of dollars spent in the repair of the surface of the slide.

“While the waterslide will go, funding has been allocated to expand and upgrade the existing splash park, which is in itself a hugely popular asset.

“The expanded splash park will be an all-abilities water play space, enhancing the all-abilities playground, barbecue area and Changing Place facilities adjacent to this asset.

“The splash park will be open for a much longer period, not just during the outdoor pool season, and unlike the waterslide, will be free to use.

“Towards the end of the summer season, we will be asking the community to tell us what they would like to see in the expanded splash park, so stay tuned for more details on that feedback opportunity.”

Ms Rice said Council acknowledged the popularity of the waterslide.

“Families have been enjoying this attraction for three decades and people who used it when they were young are now taking their children to the foreshore for a slide,” she said.

“We want to honour this by creating an artistic mural along the side of the Foreshore Kiosk with historic pictures depicting families and children using and enjoying this asset.

“If anyone has pictures they would like to share and be used in this mural, we are encouraging them to email a copy to us at info@moira.vic.gov.au – we can’t wait to see your wonderful memories.”
