Council Seeks Community Feedback on Draft Environmental Sustainability

Moira Shire is home to some of Victoria’s most beautiful and biodiverse landscapes, the mighty Murray River, ancient Barmah Forest, and the open farmland and waterways that define our region.

Protecting these places for future generations is at the heart of the draft Environmental Sustainability Strategy 2026-2031 which is now available for community review.

The strategy sets out a clear plan for how Council will enhance natural environments, support a circular economy, prepare for climate change, and reduce its own environmental footprint over the next five years. It includes measurable 2031 targets and practical actions across biodiversity, waste, water, energy and emissions.

Moira Shire Council Chair Administrator Dr Graeme Emonson PSM said the strategy reflected Council’s long-term commitment to the environment.

“Moira Shire’s natural environment is on of our greatest assets and something our community deeply values. This strategy gives us a clear direction to protect and enhance what makes our region so special, and we want to hear from as many people as possible before it is finalised,” Dr Emonson said.

“Council has a direct role in managing and protecting our natural environment. From maintaining roadsides and waterways to managing waste and investing in sustainable infrastructure. This strategy ensures the decisions we make today are focused on leaving our region in better shape for those who come after us.”

Sitting at the heart of Council’s broader vision for Moira Shire, the draft strategy directly supports the Council Plan 2025-2029 and the Moira2045 Community Vision, which calls for a thriving, connected regional community with a healthy and sustainable environment.
