Discount trees available for Moira rural properties

Moira Shire Council’s Rural Tree Scheme can help.

The scheme gives rural ratepayers access to subsidised indigenous plants. The cost of just $1 per plant includes a cardboard guard and stakes for protection.

Moira Shire Council Chair Administrator Dr Graeme Emonson PSM said the Rural Tree Scheme supported landowners to plant more native vegetation on their properties.

“The list of available plants includes bushes or trees, both small and large, which are all indigenous to our region,” Dr Emonson said.

“Whether it be for windbreaks, privacy, to increase wildlife habitat or simply to increase the number of trees or shrubs on your property, this scheme is here to help.”

 How does it work?

All rural ratepayers in Moira Shire are eligible to purchase plants at a subsidised rate through this scheme if their property is in the farming, rural living or rural conservation zones.

Plant numbers are capped at 50 plants per rate notice for properties under 5 hectares, and at 160 plants per rate notice for properties larger than 5 hectares. The scheme is capped at three rate notices per owner.

You must agree to plant and tend to all the plants you purchase. This includes preparation of the site, protection from grazing, weed control and watering.

You can order your indigenous plants from 1 July every year. Orders for the 2026 scheme are open now.

Once orders have been approved, Australian Native Farm Forestry Discount Plants Pty in Cobram East will propagate the plants, which will be available to collect from May to June in 2027.
