Coles returns to its Moira Shire roots with new Yarrawonga store

It was a historic full-circle moment when the brand-new Coles Yarrawonga opened its doors.

While Coles is recognised today as a household name across Australia, the story began in the small township of St James, about 35km from Yarrawonga.

In 1910, a young George James (GJ) Coles purchased his father’s St James general store, laying the foundation for the retail legacy we know today.

Moira Shire Council Chair Administrator Dr Graeme Emonson PSM said the new Yarrawonga store is a proud reminder of the region’s place in Australian retail history.

“GJ Coles grew up in the St James township and took over the general store from his father, laying the foundation for his entire retail career right here in Moira Shire,” Dr Emonson said.

“The opening of the new Coles complex provides access to modern facilities and services and ensures Moira Shire remains an attractive place to live, work and invest as our region continues to grow.”

GJ Coles never forgot his Moira Shire roots, even as he established his business in Melbourne and then expanded nationally.

During the Great Depression, he famously hired friends from St James to send vital wages back to struggling families, and his lifelong generosity funded the St James Hall restoration, the Recreation Reserve and Golf Course, and local sporting clubs.

That history is now permanently celebrated in the St James Silo Art, where a mural by artist Tim Bowtell depicts GJ Coles and the original St James general store.

Coles Yarrawonga opened on Wednesday 27 May.
