Detox your Home

Sustainability Victoria hold annual Detox your Home events across the state. Find out where and when the next one is here. To avoid household chemicals such as solvents, poisons and cleaning products from entering landfill, please take advantage of this service.

Why recycle household chemicals?

Household chemicals can be dangerous – they can harm your family and your pets, add extra fuel to a house fire, release toxic fumes and pollute the environment for future generations. Safely dispose of your toxic household wastes to:

  • keep them out of our waterways
  • reduce the risk of poisoning and keep our homes safe
  • minimise environmental pollution and bushfire hazards.

Who can use the service?

Detox your home is a service for households only. Chemicals used for farm, commercial or industrial processes will not be accepted. Businesses should use a commercial waste disposal company.

How much can I drop off at a Detox event?

There is no limit on the volume of materials you drop-off, however the maximum acceptable weight or size of any single container is 20 kilograms or 20 litres. Decanting is not permitted so bring chemicals in disposal containers.

How can I avoid toxins around my home?

Toxic free products like bi carb soda, vinegar, lemons and oranges, eucalyptus oil and good old fashion elbow grease work wonders around the home. Try soaking orange peel in a spray bottle for a few days for an all purpose cleaner.

Eliminating toxic chemicals in the garden is not only safe but your soil will thank you too. By using a vinegar mix or boiling water on weeds in cracked pavement, smothering with newspaper to block out the sun, there are numerous ways to avoid chemicals in the garden.
