Yarrawonga Aerodrome Runway Re-Open
Publish Date: 20/02/2012
The Yarrawonga Aerodrome was re-opened at 2pm on Thursday 16 February following works to widen the runway.
There is a need for a second temporary closure to apply the final seal layer; the date will be confirmed depending on weather conditions.
Moira Shire Council Mayor Alex Monk said the second temporary closure was unavoidable due to wet soil conditions.
The upcoming works will temporarily close the runway for approximately two days, subject to weather conditions.
"I would like to thank users and those affected by the temporary closure for their patience and understanding," Cr Monk said
The widening works were necessary to ensure the runway conformed with Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) standards and saw the runway width increased from 15 metres to 18 metres.
The upgrade also included shoulder regrading to improve drainage.
The Aerodrome typically has between 800 to 1000 movements each month and is utilised by local, regional and interstate aircraft.
Local contracting firm Judd and Sons Pty Ltd was awarded the contract to carry out the upgrade.
Moira Shire Council has had ongoing communication with the Yarrawonga Aerodrome Committee in relation to the widening works.
