Environmental sustainability a key priority

Publish Date: 23/11/2017

Moira Shire launched its new Environmental Sustainability Strategy (ESS) on Tuesday 21 November at Numurkah’s Station Street Wetlands.

Cr Marie Martin, a councillor representative on the Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee (ESAC), said council recognised the importance of a healthy environment and had a proud history of working collaboratively with a range of stakeholders to achieve positive environmental outcomes.

"This is the second ESS prepared by council and it will be used to inform council decisions and guide investment in environmental initiatives," Cr Martin said.

"From the quality of our soils to the health and beauty of our waterways and landscapes, the natural environment is at the heart of Moira’s economy, lifestyle and tourism.

"This strategy outlines how we will play our part in caring for these precious resources."

Improving the energy efficiency of council assets, expanding council’s kerbside organic collection service and increasing renewable energy uptake are just some of the projects in the new ESS.

"The strategy also outlines the importance of partnerships with the community, business and agencies," Cr Martin said.

"A key feature of the ESS is the opportunity for council to lead by example with services and projects that deliver environmental, financial and community benefits.

"Our organic waste service and energy efficient street lighting are examples of programs delivered under the previous ESS that achieved tremendous environmental gains as well as financial savings of more than $300,000 for our ratepayers.

"Some new projects include the installation of a 75kW solar system on the Cobram Service Centre, providing the building with 36% of its electricity needs and will reduce our power bill by approximately $19,000 each year.

"We are also investigating the feasibility of electric vehicles as well as integrated water management options in urban environments."
