Funding to report on environmental sustainability

Moira Shire has successfully secured $10,000 from the Victorian Government to develop an environmental sustainability reporting framework for Local Government.
Moira Shire Mayor Gary Cleveland said, improved measurement and reporting are the first steps to understanding our impact on the environment. With this knowledge we can target our efforts and collaborate with other councils to achieve the best outcomes for our local community.
“We can’t achieve what we can’t measure,” he said.
Moira Shire will lead the Collaborative Climate Change Reporting project in partnership with five other local Councils. Wodonga, Indigo, Murrindindi, Benalla and Wangaratta Councils are each contributing $10,000 to the project.
Mayor Cleveland said the Watts Working Better Project that replaced 1,700 street light globes were with energy saving LED resulting was a great example of collaborative projects delivering great outcomes for the community and the environment.
“Moira Shire reduced its street lighting costs by $150,000 a year and a reduced our emissions by 700 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent” said Mayor Cleveland.
Mayor Cleveland said the Collaborative Climate Change Reporting project will help Council improve its environmental sustainability performance and demonstrate the benefits to the community and investors.
“We are delighted to have received this grant and are looking forward to starting work on this great project,” he said.
