Moira seeks expression of interests to develop iconic Barmah Caravan Park

Moira Shire is seeking expressions of interest (EOI) from the current and potential caravan park operators to manage and develop the Barmah Caravan Park at 2 Murray Street Barmah.
Moira Shire CEO Mark Henderson said the current Barmah Caravan Park lease is due for renewal this year, and the EOI process will ensure any future lease is determined in a fair and transparent manner.
“We look forward to receiving EOIs from the existing operator as well as others who may have a vision for this unique and special location,” said Mr Henderson.
The Barmah Caravan Park is located about two hours from Melbourne alongside the Barmah National Park. The area is a popular location for camping, canoeing, bushwalking, fishing and boating and has long and rich indigenous history.
“The Barmah National Park is heritage listed and home to the largest stand of River Red Gums in the world. The oldest River Red Gums are over 500 years old and up to thirty metres tall. The Barmah township also has the unique claim of being the only Victorian town north of the Murray River,” said Mr Henderson.
“Through the EOI process we are looking for proposals from potential operators who can manage the Caravan Park and also partner in the delivery of improvement works to realise the full potential of this iconic tourism destination.
Council is seeking proposals for a lease of up to 21 years.
“The extended lease period will allow time for the operator to realise their vision for the Park,” said Mr Henderson.
Mr Henderson said any lease would be subject to a public review process and would require Ministerial approval before it could proceed.
“At this stage we anticipate the many steps including ministerial approval could take until Easter 2017 to complete. In the meantime the Caravan Park will continue to operate as normal and can continue to take bookings into the new year,” said Mr Henderson.
Further information about the EOI process including how to prepare and submit an EOI is available from Moira Shire Council. All EOIs must be received by Council by 4pm Wednesday 27 July 2016.
