Public Place Recycling
Moira Shire Council has become the first local government in Northern Victoria to introduce public place recycling after applying for an EcoRecycle Victoria pilot grant. A pilot program was initially set up in Yarrawonga in 2006. From this pilot program permanent infrastructure was implemented. Funding was applied for from Sustainability Victoria to implement the same infrastructure in Cobram. The implementation of public place recycling occurred in 2008. Cobram were chosen due to the amount of visitors and general population of the town. 22 Bin Surrounds were set up around the shopping precinct.
Public Place Recycling was initiated to capture products such as aluminium cans, plastic and glass bottles and cardboard items. These product are transported to Shepparton for further recycling. By diverting these products from landfill we are saving valuable landfill space and reducing the impact on the environment.
