Junior Council

In December 2000, Moira Shire Council voted unanimously to support the Junior Council project. Planning meetings commenced in March 2001 and six Moira Shire Secondary Schools were invited to the first formal Junior Council meeting on 4 September 2001. Each school presented debates on proposals for youth in the shire and the results were presented to Moira Shire Council.

Today, students from all six secondary schools within the Moira Shire are representatives on Junior Council. Meetings are conducted quarterly, with one school as presiding Council.

Agenda items have included:

  • a variety of youth events:
  • youth safety programs;
  • guest speakers;
  • town issues; and
  • event management and tours.

Junior Council offers its participants the chance to develop leadership skills, understand how local government operates and develop a relationship with Councillors, Council management and officers. This unique opportunity gives the Junior Council a chance to represent the youth within Moira Shire.

In turn, Councillors and staff at Moira Shire Council have the privilege of working with motivated and talented young people who may well be tomorrow's leaders.
