Educating Your Children
Delivering children to school on time, and collecting them at the end of the school day, is a task that many city people find onerous, stressful and time consuming. However, this isn’t an issue for our residents - wherever you choose to live, you’ll find an appropriate school nearby - quite often within safe walking distance for your children.
Throughout the shire, there are nine pre-schools, 17 primary schools and seven secondary colleges.
However, every bit as important as the facilities and locations is the quality of education your children will receive. Smaller class sizes offer increased opportunities in all aspects of development, and for participation in activities of choice. In addition, community partnerships offer some outstanding options.
The business community are aware that the future of their businesses will, to a large degree, depend upon the education, development and participation of today’s young people. As a result, there is strong community support for programs such as work experience and job placement.
The Moira Shire Junior Councillor program is a first class example, offering young people opportunities to participate in events and activities, speaking in public and showing leadership for others to follow.
Tertiary education is provided by the nearby regional campuses of Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE (GO TAFE), La Trobe University and Charles Sturt University. These educational facilities are supported by an Open Learning environment in Cobram, Numurkah and Yarrawonga, which offers some TAFE qualifications without having to travel outside of the Shire.
Sport and Recreation
In Moira Shire recreation and sporting opportunities abound. Numerous recreational reserves and stadiums offer football, cricket, soccer, netball and an abundance of grass tennis courts. You will also find indoor and outdoor swimming pools, water slides, day spas, gyms and skate parks.
The beautiful state and national parks surrounding the municipality provide the perfect ambience for bushwalkers.
For golfers, there are five established courses in the Shire and easy access to some of the country’s best golfing, just across the river.
Access to Health Services
Our region is more fortunate than many with regard to health care. Each of our major towns - Cobram, Nathalia, Numurkah and Yarrawonga - has a hospital with various services attached.
In total, there are 63 acute care beds and residential aged care facilities are situated in each town. Other services include labour delivery suites, community midwife program, community health nursing, radiology and pathology services, welfare and counselling services, dental clinics and a palliative care service (which takes care of the terminally ill but also supports those on a cancer journey).
For most Moira Shire residents, there is a hospital in the neighbourhood and, for many former city dwellers, this is surprising and reassuring. Although we all hope these exceptional services will never be required, it’s great to know they are available if the need ever arises.
There is also a wide variety of experienced allied and alternative health practitioners within the region.
The health and well-being of Moira Shire residents is certainly well cared for.
