Small Business Mentoring Service
Moira Shire Council works closely with Small Business Victoria to support small business to develop and grow.
One of the ways we do this is by offering a free mentoring service.
You can have a 45 minute one-on-one session with an experienced mentor that visits our shire several times a year.
The Victorian Government also operates the Mobile Business Centre, which provides free business mentoring and information for small businesses in regional Victoria and metropolitan areas.
Many small business owners don’t have the time during their day to seek advice on how to develop their business. The Mobile Business Centre makes it easier by going to them, with free and confidential business mentoring and information about the Victorian Government’s support for small businesses.
All mentors are volunteers at the Victorian Government-funded organisation Small Business Mentoring Service (SBMS) and have extensive experience in small business.
The Mobile Business Centre is also taken to areas of Victoria affected by natural disasters (such as the recent floods in Hume) to help small businesses get back on their feet.
To book a mentoring session, or find out when the Mobile Business Centre will be visiting a location near you, please go to www.business.vic.gov.au/mbc.
SBMS is an incorporated not-for-profit association. It has been in existence since 1986, when there were just 14 members. Today, there are around 100 mentors, both male and female, who have the skills and experience to help small businesses.
The mentors have diverse and interesting backgrounds and have either owned their own small business or worked in an organisation that has had strong links to small business. They are extremely passionate about the role small business plays in the economy. They also acknowledge that it can be difficult, lonely and at times financially worrying running a small business.
The mentoring service helps small businesses look at their business objectively and assists them to gain insights and ideas on marketing, finance, human resources, sales and industry knowledge.
